Legal Compliance Officer

Responsible to: Director

Role summary

We are looking for a competent Solicitor to ensure regulatory compliance and to promote client care. The successful candidate will also be working to enhance productivity and employee satisfaction. They should be a leader and critical thinker, ready to solve problems before they become obstacles.

Responsibilities

  • Participate with the Director and Practice Manager in the general management of the firm.
  • Participate with the Director and Practice Manager in promoting qualitative and quantitative performance of all staff members.
  • Undertake the roles and responsibilities of SRA Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) and Compliance Officer for Finance and Administration (COFA).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines, including those of the SRA and Legal Aid Agency.
  • Promote good client care and service amongst all staff.
  • Handle all client complaints.
  • Promote staff well-being and job satisfaction.
  • Ensure compliance by staff with internal company policies.
  • Fulfil duties as assigned by the Director.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Must be a solicitor or otherwise authorised to carry on reserved legal activities by an approved regulator.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
  • Experience of working with from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to use IT effectively.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage own workload.

Desired

  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Previously held similar position
  • Willingness to undertake some casework
  • Has an understanding of Legal Aid

Legal Secretary

Main Purpose

To provide legal secretarial / administrative support to all fee earners and management within the firm. Will be expected to work as part of a team of admin support providing excellent customer service to both clients, visitors and colleagues.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Processing incoming and outgoing post, including delivery of recorded post to the post office.
  • Archiving of case files ensuring the records are accurately updated and maintained appropriately.
  • Answering telephone calls, providing assistance where possible or forwarding calls to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Assisting visitors and clients to the office, ensuring excellent customer service is maintained at all times.
  • Undertake photocopying, faxing and bundle making as required by fee earners.
  • To arrange appointments as and when required by fee earners and ensure the calendar is updated.
  • Open new case files when instructed using the appropriate systems as advised.
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • To undertake training as and when required.
  • To maintain a professional attitude towards clients, visitors, and colleagues at all times.
  • To adhere to regulations as imposed by funders and regulators.

Person Specification

Essential

  • 3 GCSE’s including English and Mathematics
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • An ability to work well with others, under supervision or as an individual
  • Experience of using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and visitors on the telephone and in person
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment
  • Physically able to carry and move using the appropriate techniques and equipment, boxes and casefiles.
  • A commitment to the law and implementation of the same.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a similar environment
  • A knowledge of legal terminology
  • An understanding of Legal Aid

METHOD OF REMUNERATION

We believe that good work should be adequately paid. We also think that those who underperform should not be subsidised by their more industrious colleagues. Whilst we always put the clients’ interest first, we recognise the importance of regular income. This helps us pay the overheads, recruit quality staff and is one of the essential elements of every successful legal practice.

So, how are the fee earners paid?

We offer two methods of remuneration:

  • fixed salary, reviewed every 6 months, linked to a fee earners billing.  Starting salary £22,000 for entry level fee earners.  Paralegals £22,500 for first year, bonus available second year.
  • fee sharing arrangement based on an fee earner’s billing with a basic salary guaranteed.
