Training Contracts

We are committed to helping young lawyers progress in their careers and become qualified solicitors.

Over the years, we have granted a number of training contracts to our staff; we normally have three to five trainees at any given time.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A TRAINING CONTRACT?

As a matter of principle, we do not accept speculative applications for training contracts although we may, exceptionally, consider outstanding candidates. We recruit paralegal caseworkers several times a year to work with our more experienced solicitors. After the probation period, subject to satisfactory performance, the paralegals may be offered training contracts.

WHERE DO WE ADVERTISE?

The job adverts are normally posted on YLAL and Indeed websites.

WHO ARE OUR PREFERRED CANDIDATES?

The interest for our paralegal positions is very high and we tend to have approximately 80-100 applications for each position. We expect to receive a cover letter and a CV from each applicant. The ideal candidates are motivated people with a genuine and lasting interest in the rule of law, human rights and protection of the most vulnerable. This includes some very serious offenders with long custodial sentences who you would be assisting with prison law issues. So, if helping prisoners, destitute and vulnerable individuals in our society does not motivate you, you are probably wasting your time. Equally, if you see us as a stepping stone to a more lucrative career in a commercial law firm, you may be disappointed.

HOW DO WE SELECT THE PROSPECTIVE TRAINEES?

You will be given a written test consisting of multiple choice questions and a drafting exercise. The questions are not difficult but, apart from the ability to write in a succinct and structured way, we want to be sure that the selected applicants have an interest in the areas of law we practise and understand the importance of our work. The written test will be followed by a short interview.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED…

Our remuneration scheme is explained on our website. The paralegal caseworkers will work for a period of six months before their appraisal. If their supervisor is happy with their work, they will be confirmed in post. The probation period could be extended, when necessary.  A training contract maybe considered after working as a paralegal/caseworker for 12 months and an ability to bill/meet targets has been demonstrated.
